Tech Layoffs
TechCrunch is reporting that their layoff tracker has passed 100,000 tech layoffs since August 27, 2008.
This amount is pretty staggering. I’m pretty comfortable in my current job. They gave me a pretty nice raise after I got my MBA, but I’m always on the lookout. Right now is a very bad time to be in the job market. It would be very bad to be laid off right now.
It’s not a secret that there are bad things happening in the economy. Hopefully PEBO, when he takes office, will have some magic power that turns things around. I’m pretty disappointed with the way the bailouts have been going and I think that they might not be the right approach. Obama has some interesting ideas about public works projects. It worked during the great depression. Hopefully, instead of just building a bunch of construction projects, there are significant projects aimed at the tech sector. High tech industry is how we are staying ahead in the new inter-connected world. It’s important to continue that trend. I know I’m biased, but NASA needs it’s budget tripled. NSF and others need some big shots in the arm. Since the military is so big on the funding food-chain, DARPA should get some of the pie too. It’s easy to focus on the unemployed poor with make-work programs building roads and infrastructure. We also need to focus on unemployed tech workers. These are the ones that can get our economy moving again.
